Constant Lightning Crotch Pain in pragnancy

Constant Lightning Crotch [Severe Vaginal Pain in Pregnancy]

Pregnancy is one of many miraculous experiences in the life of women, it could be a period of extensive changes in the body. At the same time, it is a period towards a new chapter of life. Among many ordeals that women go through during early pregnancy, one is known as a lightning crotch. It appears in the third trimester of pregnancy and is usually very painful and uncomfortable. The ache arises naturally as a reminder that changes take place in the body once a woman is pregnant.

Constant lightning crotch is a sharp sensation and pain in the groin- it feels more or less like an electric shock and thunder that contracts the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. As uncomfortable as it can be, a good thing is that it does not last for a long time period.

In general, a lightning crotch is a pain straight from or within the vagina. Women may experience it during the third trimester of pregnancy and it involves pointy sensations that send electric shocks through the body. The origin is the pelvic floor, it fires into the vagina as well as in the rectum, causing an insane amount of physical discomfort.

What is lightning crotch?

Almost all mothers-to-be feel frequent lightning crotch electric pain in the pelvic, vaginal and rectal areas at one point in their lives.  The weight of the body can compress the nerves lying within the muscles to cause throbbing pain from time to time.

Towards the end of the pregnancy, the baby begins to make its way to the passage and its head may be the reason why most women experience persistent and sustained discomfort in their cervix. The head compresses the muscles in the cervix area in particular of the pregnant woman, the weight of the body itself is another cause for the pain down there.

Normally, pain from the lightning crotch may subside within a matter of minutes. However, it could be different for the mothers having issues related to back and muscle pain. The experience could be a lot more gruesome for them because they have pre-existing issues to add more jolts of consistent discomfort.  It may take more than a few minutes for the pain to subside if there are some issues already.

Difference between lightning crotch pain and other pelvic pain:

In early pregnancy, a woman may undergo a lot of unexplainable series of pain and aches in the vaginal area.  You can easily tell if the pain you are experiencing is a consistent lightning crotch or not, it starts within the pelvic area and shoots in different areas of the body. It may be extremely unbearable at the time, continuous and reinforcing a lot of pressure on the vagina itself along with the abdomen and rectum. At times you may have difficulty sitting straight or lying down comfortably.

During pregnancy, general pelvic pain is very common, it may leave you questioning how to tell the difference between regular pelvic pain and a constant lightning crotch. In the former experience, women only feel normal pain, which is bearable. In the latter experience, the pain comes like a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen and pelvic area around the pubic bone, causing jolts like electric shocks in the body.

There’s sciatica, pain that comes from the pelvic area and moves down to the legs. You may feel intense pressure in the body within the veins of the vulva.  The pain may be as uncomfortable as other aches that arise during pregnancy but this is completely bearable, feels more like a contraction or a minor pressure.

Lightening crotch pain is completely different from all sorts of pain, it is like the sensation of pins and needles in the body and is very sharp and constant. The level of discomfort may make you sob or moan for a couple of seconds as well. You know it when you have it.

Pain as a sign of labor

In some women, lightning pain is the first sign that they’re in labor. Some women can even feel their cervix as it dilates. If you’re experiencing lightning pain and have any other symptoms like regular contractions, persistent backache, or any leaking of fluid, you might be in labor. If you experience any of these symptoms and are under 37 weeks pregnant, be sure to seek medical treatment right away

What Causes Lightning Crotch?

There’s a burning question as to what causes lightning crotch? In essence, there might be two causes for this pain to start off during pregnancy.

Extreme amounts of pressure are natural in the pelvic area during pregnancy when the baby gradually grows up. The pressure affects the uterus and placenta as well and generally, it intensifies when the baby moves inside the body, it tosses and turns, changes positions, and sometimes kicks. With time, the baby makes its way to the lower abdomen as well, the head naturally drops down during the end of the pregnancy. When this happens, the pressure causes a continuous lightning crotch.

Here are some of the common causes of lightning crotch:

  1.  Your baby is turning, changing position inside you, pressing against your cervices, and descending into the birth canal.
  2. Pubic bones are separating during pregnancy, causing the lightning crotch. The hormone relaxant helps separate the pubic bones in preparation for the birth and this causes a sharp pain.
  3. The baby is growing stronger than before, kicking inside you to make you see the stars.
  4. Underlying medical conditions like fibromyalgia, nerve disorders, and gallbladder infection could also be a reason for lightning crotch.

What Are the Symptoms of Lightning Crotch?

Some women have naturally more tolerance to overall sharp pains and aches of pregnancy. Their strength comes from their physical structure and good diet certainly. However, most women have less tolerance to the pain because it is by far the most throbbing one in the entire period of pregnancy.

Symptoms of lightning crotch may vary from one woman to another. Some may feel minor electric jolts and discomforts others may feel intense sensations due to the pressure built up in the muscles.

Although lightning crotch is very common, some women don’t even undergo this pain at any point in their pregnancy. Others may experience it more than once during the third and fourth trimesters.  You may experience lightning crotch more often in one pregnancy, and not in another, it all depends on the changes occurring in your body and they are natural to avoid.

What Lightning Crotch Feels Like:

When in Pregnancy Is Lightning Crotch Constantly Experienced?

Most women experience the symptoms of lightning crotch in the third trimester as it’s the time when the pregnancy progresses and the baby grows more than before. However, some women may feel the pain towards the top of the trimester also, it all depends on how much pressure is building due to the weight, movement, and growth of the baby in the pelvic.

Natural Remedies for Lightning Crotch

There are a lot of natural remedies that you can make the most of to ease out the pain from lightning crotch. Your baby will continue to grow as you can never control his movements and positions, but you can relieve the pain to a great extent by doing some workouts.

1. Chiropractic adjustments

Consult a chiropractor in order to seek help regarding your spine and releasing subluxations. The spine is aligned during the procedure to prevent nervous disorder.  Since the major cause is the weight of the body you need help to balance up a bit to relieve yourself from the consistent lightning crotch.

2. Myofascial release

Myofascial release is a well-known therapy focused on normalizing pelvic floor muscles, partially tonus. The chiropractor uses special methods to release disorders and imbalances in the pelvic region by activating trigger points. The therapy works well for the most part in discharging the pain associated with the constant lightning crotch.

3. Movement and exercise

Breathing exercises can help tremendously in relaxing your mind and body overall. Breath in and out when you wake up in the morning. Regular and light exercise may have a lot of benefits as well for pregnant women. This is the reason why women love doing yoga, it helps align the spine and to release any undue pain associated with the pregnancy itself such as the lightning crotch. Regular workouts also prepare the body for labor beforehand, thus are very recommended at an early stage of the pregnancy.

Keep the body in an optimal position and balance your pelvic floor by opting for some of the best lightning crotch exercises. Don’t force yourself into going to a painful position. Choose an exercise that you believe you can do easily. It should be to relieve pelvic pain and support muscles.

During lightning crotch pain, the round ligament muscles are usually very tight and discomforting.  You will feel as if there’s a constant pulling sensation in the pelvis and around the virginal labia.

Pregnancy exercises will help you release pressure in the body by relaxing the body and preventing the pain around the round ligament muscles.

When to seek medical attention?

The symptoms of lightning crotch are short-lived, meaning the pain is going to subside itself after a few minutes of discomfort.  The strange sensation starts very quickly and unexpectedly, makes you sigh and cry in pain, and subsides slowly naturally.  It is important for you to let it recollect on its own, there’s nothing to worry about.

It’s likely that as quickly as the lightning crotch begins, it will be over soon and you don’t have to panic about it even if it is painful. It will go away itself.

If your symptoms of constant lightning crotch are several and bothersome, causing vaginal pain more often then they should go for home remedies. Perform workout and try exercises to relax the pelvic area., If at-home remedies aren’t much helpful, bring this up with your doctor or midwife to come up with a good solution.

It is better for you to feel safe, if the tingling sensation is beyond painful, you must seek professional help.
